The Faculty of Health Sciences of the Cyprus University of Technology is inviting you to the open lecture :
A Biobank is growing in Cyprus
Speaker: Prof. Constantinos Deltas University of Cyprus Medical School Director, Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research
A Biobank is growing in Cyprus, with the principal aim to satisfy multiple unmet needs in precision medicine research. As a major pillar of the new Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research, biobank.cy, is creating the prospects for next generation medical research in Cyprus, based
on high quality European-standard biobanking. The first project of the Biobank is the preparation of the Cypriot human genome, to serve as a reference for many other medical studies concerning genetics.
The Biobank was in position to serve as an excellent biorepository for material from COVID-19 patients, to support current and future studies.
In 2019, we succeeded in the H2020-Widening Participation-TEAMING-Phase 2 program, which provides for €38mi, co-funded by the European Commission, the Republic of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus. The project is a Coordination and Support Action for creating a research infrastructure, as a Center of Excellence in Research and Innovation. The project, titled:
Biobanking and the Cyprus Human Genome Project, is well in its way for upgrading the Biobank to European standards, implementing high quality procedures, firstly by obtaining ISO-9001 and then the Biobank specific ISO-20387, in collaboration with our Advanced Partners (BBMRI-ERIC & Medical University Graz), and local Partner RTD TALOS Ltd. The Biobank operates in compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation, while it applies all appropriate measures to protect its data from external infringement. It has established an Internal Ethics Committee and an International Advisory Ethics Board aimed to overview the ethical, legal and social implications associated with biobanking and research. Recently we started the installation of an advanced Biobanking Information Management System, which is going to be the absolute nucleus of the database, aimed to serve robust storing/retrieval procedures and foster datamining for all kinds of future research.
All records are accompanied by demographic and clinical data and biological material in the form of DNA, plasma, serum, and urine. Several research projects have been in progress with the use of banked data and material while foreign academic and commercial entities, expressed interest in collaborating on projects relating to the available data and material.
