Dr. Kambanaros is a certified bilingual English–Greek Speech Pathologist with over 25 years of clinical experience and academic appointments in Greece and Cyprus. She received her bachelor degree in speech pathology and later on her PhD qualification from Flinders University of South Australia (Australia), School of Medicine, Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. 
  
 She is an honorary member of the Association of Speech Pathologists and Speech Therapists, Scientists of Greece. She is also a member of the International Association of Logopedics & Phoniatrics (IALP), Speech Pathology Australia (SPA), the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), the Registered Association of Speech & Language Pathologists of Cyprus, and an associate member of the Academy of Aphasia. She is a member of the IALP Multilingual Affairs Committee. 
  
 Dr. Kambanaros is the author of a highly successful book on diagnostic issues in speech therapy (Διαγνωστικά Θέματα Λογοθεραπείας Athens: ELLIN Publishing Co.) which has been adopted as the standard university textbook in Speech and Language Therapy programs in Greece and Cyprus, with over 3,000 copies sold to date. 
  
 She is highly committed to developing tools and valid diagnostic measures for assessing language impairments in multilingual individuals. Her research interests are related to acquired and developmental language impairments in bi-multilingual speakers, predominantly as related to the lexicon, with an emphasis on assessment and treatment outcomes. Specifically, her work focuses on word retrieval impairments that is, difficulties with accessing words for children with developmental language disorders and adults with acquired language deficits after brain injury or pathology. She is particularly interested in how speakers retrieve verbs (action words) and nouns (concrete objects) on naming tasks and in spontaneous language. Her research so far has shown that verbs appear more difficult to retrieve compared to nouns for most language-impaired individuals with different conditions (e.g., aphasia, schizophrenia, specific language impairment, and more) across some, but not all, language tasks. She also investigates how the meaning of a verb can influence how easily or difficult it is to name. 
  
 Dr. Kambanaros also assumes the role of Clinical Assessor & Therapist for the Cyprus Acquisition Team, a cross-institutional research initiative in Cyprus (http://www.research.biolinguistics.eu/CAT). Here she is involved in all research projects carried out in the team. In addition, she was a Management Committee member of COST Action IS0804 on SLI in bilingual children (http://www.bi-sli.org) and is currently involved in working group 2 of COST Action 0812 on aphasia (http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/isch/Actions/IS1208).

Research Areas 

SUMMARY OF CURRENT RESEARCH 

Background 

After working for many years with language-impaired children and adults in both Greek and English, I realized that anomia (word-finding difficulties) is a particularly prominent clinical marker across conditions (and languages) evident in naming abilities and conversational skills of many individuals seeking my services. This spurred my interest in the field of lexical access and retrieval. 

My subsequent research endeavors can be roughly divided into two stages: (i) From 2000 to 2003, I worked on lexical access particularly for verbs and nouns, in the two languages of bilingual individuals (Greek and English) who had suffered a stroke, which led to my PhD dissertation Verb and Noun Retrieval in Bilingual Greek–English Individuals with Anomic Aphasia. (ii) From 2004 onwards, I have independently carried out research on lexical access for verbs and nouns for different linguistic tasks (e.g., naming, sentence retrieval, connected speech), experiments I most often designed myself, and across different adult clinical groups including patients with focal lesions (e.g., aphasia) and non-focal brain injury (e.g., schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, primary progressive aphasia) as well as bilectal and multilingual children with typical language development and those diagnosed with a primary (SLI/PLI) or secondary developmental language disorder (such as autism spectrum disorder and various genetic syndromes). 

Between 2009 and 2012, I extended my research expertise into the field of developmental language disorders, with a particular emphasis on Specific Language Impairment (SLI) brought upon by my relocation from Greece to Cyprus in 2009, where I have actively participated in research activities by the Cyprus Acquisition Team, such as the Gen-CHILD Project awarded by the University of Cyprus to Prof. Kleanthes K. Grohmann and two European research networks on the topic, COST Action A33 Cross-Linguistically Robust Stages of Children’s Linguistic Performance and COST Action IS0804 Language Impairment in a Multilingual Society. My role in the CAT Lab as clinical assessor and therapist has allowed me to collaborate with the research team from the University of Cyprus on wider-ranging investigations of language development, specifically first and second language acquisition of bilectal, multilingual, and monolingual children, adolescents, and adults residing largely in Cyprus (but also in Australia, Germany, Greece, and Russia, for example). We investigate vocabulary development, naming tasks, executive function tasks, clitics, sentence repetition, and a host of other tools for developmental language impairment (such as SLI or dyslexia), and genetically induced language disorders. 

Research Activities (RA) 

 [RA1] Diagnostics and development of experimental linguistic measures: development of language assessment measures for (Cypriot) Greek and the development of tools to tap into the complex morphosyntax of Greek; [RA2] Aphasia & neurolinguistics: lexical access and breakdown, assessment, intervention in bi/multilingual speakers; [RA3] Neurorehabilitation: non-invasive brain stimulation methods and behavioral treatments; [RA4] Psycholinguistics: acquisition in typical, atypical, and impaired language development, first and second language, multilingualism as well as diglossia, minority languages, and dialects at large. 

RA1. Diagnostics and experimental linguistic tools 

I consider my primary area of expertise to lie in mapping behavioral language patterns across cognitive pathologies comparatively using specific linguistics tools that are culturally appropriate. My work so far has involved individuals with aphasia after stroke, the dementias, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, autism, specific language impairment, and genetic syndromes. I have set up a research agenda that involves developing and administering experimental linguistic tools through the study of disorders of the brain that affect language function (word level and connected speech). This area is reflected in my journal publications on the following topics: 

research on verb and noun lexical access using the Greek Object and Action Test (GOAT) or the Cypriot Object and Action Test (COAT); 

research on interpretation of noun-noun endocentric compound words using my own 2014 Greek Compound Word Test; 

research using the LITMUS-Sentence Repetition Test (Greek and or Cypriot Greek version); 

research using the LITMUS-MAIN (Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narration); 

cross-linguistic symptoms of language breakdown; 

issues related to language assessment adaptations of existing tools from English or Greek into Cypriot Greek 

Main results: We have a developed a large data base of close to 1,000 individual participant files on language performance on our experimental linguistic tools and assessment measures. With regards to the assessment measures we are in the processing of mapping the results onto normal distribution curves to determine cut-off points and specificity and sensitivity of the measures. The aim is to provide speech-language therapists with valid and reliable tools for assessment/diagnostic purposes. The data from the experimental linguistic tools is important in order to describe the manifestations of developmental and acquired language impairments in a highly inflected and morphologically complex language, Greek, which is currently under-represented in the literature. For example, Nomiki Karpathiou (PhD student) is using the experimental tools to stage linguistic deficits in individuals with Primary Progressive Aphasia who are Greek speakers or bilingual speakers. Similarly, Manos Anyfantis (PhD student) is using the experimental tools to describe the language manifestations of Greek speakers with Parkinson’s Disease. 

RA2. Aphasia and Neurolinguistics 

In Cyprus, current figures reveal that on average 1,200–1,400 people suffer a stroke each year (Cyprus Ministry of Health report, 2016), yet the real number of people living with post-stroke disabilities is unknown—but using European data, we can estimate that it could be around 12,000 people. High-quality scientific evidence to guide effective treatment practices is limited within current resources in Cyprus. 

Main results: We have a developed a large data base of around 300 individual patient files of adults with acquired language disorders because of stroke or other neurological conditions (Mild Cognitive Impairment, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, PPA, AD) from monolingual, bilectal, and multilingual backgrounds. I have been very active in disseminating the linguistic manifestations of acquired language deficits for Greek speakers, but I have also tackled topics around service delivery, and people with aphasia’s stroke narratives. 

RA3. Neurorehabilitation 

I was recently awarded funding from the national research agency (Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, €250,000) to carry out a randomized control trial on the effectiveness of treatment protocols using non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods (TMS) as an adjunctive therapy to SLT for language recovery after first-time stroke. The awarded project, with the acronym ASPIRE (Assessment of Post-Stroke Aphasia for Rehabilitation Research) involves recruiting first-time stroke survivors who are in the sub-acute (> 3 months) and chronic stage (> 6 months post-stroke) for NIBS and SLT research. Participants are assessed on comprehensive neuro-cognitive and linguistic batteries, molecular measures (genetic & blood biomarkers) and neuroimaging measures (brain volumetric, anatomical & functional connectivity measures) before and immediately after real or sham TMS treatment, and at six months follow-up post-treatment. This is the first-ever opportunity for funded stroke rehabilitation research in Cyprus. 

RA4. Psycholinguistics 

My more recent attempts are to contribute to the field of psycholinguistics, namely by carrying out research on typical, atypical, and impaired language acquisition and development in multilingual environments. I collaborate with language acquisitionists, linguists, developmental psychologists, and especially speech–language therapists/ pathologists to study and describe the first language acquisition of bilectal speakers, that is, speakers who grow up in sociolinguistically diglossic speech communities (predominantly in the Republic of Cyprus). Our natural focus lies on language development of Greek Cypriots whose two linguistic varieties, Cypriot Greek and Standard Modern Greek—and arguably some lects in between, from basilectal rural Cypriot Greek to a more refined urban Cypriot (which has also been dubbed ‘pancyprian koiné’ or ‘Cypriot Standard Greek’)—are not only very close to one another but also quite different in many interesting ways. 

Main Results: How does bilectalism stand to cognition in general, and executive functions in particular? Given that the so-called ‘bilingual advantage’ has been explored for a number of languages and populations, can we find something similar in bilectal individuals? The answer we can give after administering a large battery of tests on vocabulary, pragmatics, metaphors, working memory, and other, more specified tasks of executive control on monolingual children from Greece, bilectal children from Cyprus, and English–(Cypriot) Greek bi/multilingual children from Cyprus, bilectal children really seem to pattern in between: executive functions better than in monolingual, but not as strongly expressed as in multilingual children.

Labs 

The Brain and Neurorehabilitation Lab 

The Brain & Neurorehabilitation Lab at the University Rehabilitation Clinic of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences has three goals: Research, Patient Care, and Education. The lab provides the research staff with access to cutting-edge noninvasive brain stimulation technology and employs different neural stimulation techniques (i.e. rTMS and transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) for exploring the relationship between brain and behaviour, questions about brain plasticity and its modulation that is combined with careful experimental task designs and brain imaging in healthy populations and patients with neurological disoders. 

The lab is equipped with a Magstim Super Rapid2 magnetic stimulation unit that is capable of both single pulse and rapid rate stimulation output at high power. The combination of the Super Rapid2 and Air Film Coils allows the application of high frequency rTMS for long durations suitable for therapeutic applications. The addition of the therapy chair enables a complete solution, maintaining comfort for the patients whilst stimulation is being delivered. 

The ANT-NEURO Visor2 LT image-guided frameless stereotactic system is used for accurate real-time visualization of stimulated brain areas (www.ant-neuro.com). This system allows guidance for placement of the TMS coil on the participant’s head from the 3-D reconstructed brain MRI (either anatomical of functional images can be used for guidance). The position of the participant’s head and the TMS coil are detected by the infrared camera and merged onto the patient’s MRI. The computer displays, online, the brain target that would be primarily affected by the projection of the main vector of the induced magnetic field pulse assuming that the magnetic field flows perpendicular to the plane of the coil and the affected brain area is, in turn, perpendicular to the magnetic field (hence parallel to the coil plane). 

The lab is also equipped with multiple stimulation coils that including various sizes of 8-shaped coils for focal stimulation and circular coils, as well as specially designed double-cone coils for deeper brain stimulation, and various air-cooled coils. In addition, specially designed sham coils matching the various real coils are available.

Η Κάκια Πετεινού είναι Καθηγήτρια και πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Επιστημών Αποκατάστασης της Σχολής Επιστημών Υγείας στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Είναι επίσης συντονίστρια του μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος «Αναπτυξιακές Διαταραχές Επικοινωνίας» στο ΤΕΠΑΚ. Κατέχει πτυχίο Bachelor(CUM LAUDE) και Master (M.Ed)στη Λογοθεραπεία/ Λογοπαθολογία από το University of Georgia των ΗΠΑ όπως επίσης και Διδακτορικό (PhD) στις Επιστήμες Λόγου και Ακοής από το City University of New York Graduate Center των ΗΠΑ με ειδίκευση στην αναπτυξιακή ψυχογλωσσολογία. 
  
 Τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στη γλωσσική ανάπτυξη παιδιών με αργή ανάπτυξη στο λόγο και τη σχέση αυτής με χρόνια γλωσσική καθυστέρηση (αναπτυξιακή γλωσσική διαταραχή, παιδική λεκτική απραξία, φωνολογική διαταραχή, διαταραχές φάσμα αυτισμού). Ασχολείται επίσης με την μελέτη πρώιμων μοτίβων πρώιμης τυπικής και παθολογικής γλωσσικής ανάπτυξη καθώς επίσης και με την ανάπτυξη εργαλείων γλωσσικής αξιολόγησης παιδιών νηπιακής, προσχολικής και σχολικής ηλικίας. 
  
 Διετέλεσε Λέκτορας στο Τμήμα Επιστημών Διαταραχών Λόγου και Επικοινωνίας (Communication Sciences and Disorders) του Albert Einstein College of Medicine, ΗΠΑ και επισκέπτρια Λέκτορας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου στη τμήμα Αγγλικής Φιλολογίας και στο τμήμα Βυζαντινών και Νεοελληνικών σπουδών. Διετέλεσε επίσης Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Λογοπαθολογίας και Γλωσσολογίας στο Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Εργάστηκε ως επιστημονική συνεργάτης στο Ινστιτούτο Νευρολογίας και Γενετικής Κύπρου (Τμήμα Κλινικής Γενετικής) και υπήρξε επιστημονική υπεύθυνος σε διάφορα χρηματοδοτούμενα ερευνητικά έργα (δες Βιογραφικό). Είναι μέλος του Συνδέσμου International Association of Logopedics & Phoniatrics (IALP). Ταυτόχρονα, από το 2020 είναι πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής στο Φάσα Αυτισμού του International Association of Communication Disorders (IALP). Είναι διευθύντρια του ερευνητικού εργαστηρίου http://theralab.cut.ac.cy/. Είναι εγγεγραμμένο μέλος του Συλλόγου Λογοπαθολόγων Κύπρου και από το 2010-2013 διετέλεσε και πρόεδρός του. 
  
 Η ερευνητική της εργασία έχει δημοσιευτεί σε διάφορα επιστημονικά περιοδικά. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε πολλά διεθνή συνέδρια με ερευνητικές ανακοινώσεις στον τομέα της γλωσσικής κατάκτησης και γλωσσικής διαταραχής, πρώιμης γλωσσικής καθυστέρησης και φωνολογικής ανάπτυξης και αποκατάστασης μέσω τεκμηριωμένης πρακτικής και θεωρητικής προσέγγισης. 
  
  
  

Ερευνητικά Ενδιαφέροντα 

Η Δρ. Κάκια Πετεινού είναι Καθηγήτρια και Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Επιστημών Αποκατάστασης της Σχολής Επιστημών Υγείας στο  Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (ΤΕΠΑΚ). Είναι  επίσης και Ιδρύτρια και  Διευθύντρια του ΘΕΜΕΛΙΑΚΟΥ ΕΡΓΑΣΤΗΡΙΟΥ ΑΠΟΚΑΤΑΣΤΑΣΗΣ «Θ.ΕΡ.ΑΠΟ» “THERALAB” . Τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στα χαρακτηριστικά της πρώιμης γλωσσικής ανάπτυξης και γλωσσικής αργοπορίας με στόχο τον εντοπισμό και την ανίχνευση προγνωστικών παραγόντων της χρόνιας γλωσσικής διαταραχής (αναπτυξιακής γλωσσικής διαταραχής, παιδικής  απραξίας λόγου, διαταραχών φθόγγων ομιλίας,   και  διαταραχών στο φάσμα του αυτισμού. Συνάμα μελετά τη  σχέση φωνολογικής ικανότητας και  σημασιολογικής ποικιλομορφίας και στην  αποκατάστασης διαταραχών λόγου στην προσχολική ηλικία βάσει της τεκμηριωμένης πρακτικής και εφαρμογή θεωρητικών πλαισίων στην αποκατάσταση διαταραχών ομιλίας σε παιδιά. . Επίσης εστιάζεται στην ανάπτυξη έγκυρων και αποτελεσματικών εργαλείων ανίχνευσης, αξιολόγησης και διάγνωσης προβλημάτων επικοινωνίας στον παιδιατρικό πληθυσμό με απώτερο στόχο την μελέτη του παιδιατρικού γλωσσικού προφίλ  βάσει της αποκατάσταση των διαταραχών της επικοινωνίας και της παροχής πρώιμης παρέμβασης.  Έχει εργαστεί σε διάφορα ιατρικά και ακαδημαϊκά ιδρύματα στην Αμερική και στην Κύπρο όπως το Albert Einstein College of Medicine,  Atlanta Veteran’s Administration Hospital, NYC United Cerebral Palsy Center, Touro College, Yeshiva University, Stern University for Women, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, Ινστιτούτο Νευρολογίας και Γενετική  Κύπρου, Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Επιπλέον, διετέλεσε  ερευνητικό μέλος σε ομάδα εργασίας στα πλαίσια COST ACTION IS1406-Enhancing children’s oral language skills across Europe. Από το 2018 είναι πρόεδρος της επιστημονικής επιτροπής διαταραχών στο φάσμα αυτισμού (ASD committee) του οργανισμού International Association of Communication Disorders (IALP).

Από το 2018 εργάζεται ως Επίκουρος Καθηγητής Γνωστικής Νευροεπιστήμης στο Τμήμα Επιστημών Αποκατάστασης, στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στις νευρολογικές βάσεις των γνωστικών μηχανισμών της προσοχής, της αντίληψης και της βραχύχρονης μνήμης σε υγιείς και κλινικούς πληθυσμούς (κατάθλιψη, άγχος, εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο, κρανιοεγκεφαλικές κακώσεις, άνοια). Έχει εξειδίκευση στη χρήση συμπεριφορικών πειραματικών μεθόδων, μεθόδων νευροαπεικόνισης με τη χρήση MRI, καθώς και μεθόδων μη-επεμβατικής εγκεφαλικής διέγερσης (TMS, tDCS). 

Ερευνητικά Ενδιαφέροντα

Ο Δρ. Μακρής είναι καθηγητής περιβαλλοντικής υγείας και επιβλέπει το εργαστήριο Νερό και Υγεία στο Διεθνές Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου για την Περιβαλλοντική και Δημόσια Υγεία στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διετέλεσε ως εξωτερικός καθηγητής περιβαλλοντικής υγείας στο Τμήμα Περιβαλλοντικής Υγείας, στο πανεπιστήμιο του Χάρβαρντ, ΗΠΑ (2009-2015). Η ερευνητική ομάδα του Δρ. Μακρή στοχεύει στη μείωση κινδύνου υγείας για σειρά περιβαλλοντικών ρύπων που βρίσκονται στο πόσιμο νερό αλλά ταυτόχρονα και σε άλλα περιβαλλοντικά μέσα. Προς αυτόν το σκοπό, η ομάδα του εφαρμόζει βελτιωμένα πρωτόκολλα αξιολόγησης του ανθρώπινου εκθεσιώματος, συμμετέχοντας σε πληθυσμιακές μελέτες στην Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα, τη Γαλλία, το Κουβέιτ, την Ολλανδία και τη Νορβηγία. Το εργαστήριό του είναι εξοπλισμένο με υπερσύγχρονα όργανα αξίας> 0,5 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ για τη δημιουργία δικών του δεδομένων βιοδεικτών και μεταβολισμού. Από το 2009, έχει λάβει εξωτερική χρηματοδότηση ύψους> 1,5 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ από την ΕΕ, το Κυπριακό ΙΠΕ, το δίκτυο BBMBI-LPC στην ΕΕ και το Εθνικό Ινστιτούτο Περιβαλλοντικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου του Χάρβαρντ. Έχει εκπονήσει πάνω από 85 άρθρα περιοδικών και 40 αναφορές συνεδρίων. Ήταν ένας από τους δύο ερευνητές που διενήργησαν την έρευνα για το σύμπλεγμα καρκίνου του εγκεφάλου γύρω από το εργοστάσιο Astrasol στην Κύπρο. Ο κ. Μακρής προσκλήθηκε από την Επιτροπή Περιβάλλοντος και Υγείας του Κυπριακού Κοινοβουλίου να παράσχει τεχνική μαρτυρία για τις συνέπειες για την υγεία των γύρω πληθυσμών μετά την τραγωδία / έκρηξη στο Μαρί, Κύπρου και έχει επίσης υπηρετήσει ως μέλος της επιστημονικής συμβουλευτικής επιτροπής στο Υπουργείο Υγείας σχετικά με τις εκθέσεις αρσενικού στην Κύπρο. ΄Εχει προσκληθεί από> 10 πανεπιστήμια και οργανισμούς στις Η.Π.Α. / ΕΕ για την πραγματοποίηση ομιλιών, όπως στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Harvard, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Emory, στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Αλμπέρτα, στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Delaware κλπ. και έχει προεδρεύσει σε 6 συμπόσια σε διεθνή συνέδρια . 
  

Ερευνητικά Ενδιαφέροντα 

Η ομάδα του κ. Μακρή ερευνά τη σχέση περιβαλλοντικών παραγόντων και χρόνιων νοσημάτων χρησιμοποιώντας τις θεματικές έννοιες του εκθεσιώματος (exposome), δηλαδή την ολιστική αποτύπωση όλων εκείνων των περιβαλλοντικών παραγόντων/τρόπου ζωής και συμπεριφοράς που σχετίζονται με τη δημιουργία χρόνιων νοσημάτων, δίδοντας ιδιαίτερη έμφαση σε ορμονικούς καρκίνους ή ενδοκρινολογικές διαταραχές.

Το εργαστήριο μας είναι άρτια εξοπλισμένο με φασματογράφους μάζας για εξειδικευμένες αναλύσεις σε ανθρώπινα βιολογικά υγρά.O κύριος στόχος του εργαστηρίου είναι η ενδελεχής μελέτη παραγόντων κινδύνου για την υγεία που συνδέονται με χρόνιες εκθέσεις σε περιβαλλοντικούς στρεσογόνους παράγοντες ή διατροφικές συνήθειες/τρόπο ζωής εφαρμόζοντας νέες, καινοτόμες μεθοδολογίες αξιολόγησης της ανθρώπινης έκθεσης. Η μετάβαση της ερευνητικής εστίασης από τη νόσο στην ταυτόχρονη αξιολόγηση ανθρώπινων εκθέσεων σε διάφορους παράγοντες ρίσκου υγείας μέσω της εφαρμογής της έννοιας exposome θα ανοίξει νέα μονοπάτια κατανόησης της παθογένεσης.

Η Δρ. Άντρη Παναγιώτου είναι Επίκουρη Καθηγήτρια στη Δημόσια Υγεία στο Διεθνές Ινστιτούτο Περιβαλλοντικής και Δημόσιας Υγείας στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Η έρευνα της επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη παραγόντων κινδύνου και βιο-δεικτών (γενετικών, βιοχημικών, περιβαλλοντικών και κοινωνικών), για καρδιαγγειακή υγεία και αθηροσκλήρωση, ενώ πρόσφατα το ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον της επεκτάθηκε και στη μελέτη παραγόντων κινδύνου για το συσχετιζόμενο «καρδιονεφρολογικό σύνδρομο» και την αγγειακή γήρανση, υπό το πρίσμα της υπόθεσης «κοινού εδάφους» (common grounds for disease hypothesis). Από το 2011, έχει ιδρύσει το Ερευνητικό Εργαστήριο Καρδιαγγειακής Επιδημιολογίας και Γενετικής (www.cveglab.cut.ac.cy), κάτω από το οποίο διενεργούνται μελέτες για τον ρόλο της κοινότητας στην καρδιαγγειακή υγεία/γήρανση και συντονίζει μεγάλη πληθυσμιακή μελέτη στην Κύπρο, η οποία αποτελεί μέρος Ευρωπαϊκών και διεθνών συνεργασιών (consortia). Αυτές οι συνεργασίες επέτρεψαν στον υπό μελέτη κυπριακό πληθυσμό να συμπεριληφθεί σε σημαντικές μελέτες για καρδιαγγειακά νοσήματα, οι οποίες είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα δημοσιεύσεις σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά με υψηλό συντελεστή απήχησης όπως το Circulation και το Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Η ΑΠ είναι Γενική Γραμματέας και ιδρυτικό μέλος της Κυπριακής Εταιρείας Αθηροσκλήρωσης και επικεφαλής της Κυπριακής Μονάδας Βιοηθικής, κάτω από την Έδρα Βιοηθικής της Ουνέσκο (Χάιφα), ενώ είναι μέλος στην Εθνική Επιτροπή Βιοηθικής Κύπρου (2015-2019 και 2019-).

Το Εργαστήριο Καρδιαγγειακής Επιδημιολογίας και Γενετικής (CVEG Lab) υπάγεται στο Διεθνές Ινστιτούτο Περιβαλλοντικής και Δημόσιας Υγείας (CII), υπό την αιγίδα του Τεχνολογικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου.

Associate Professor Costas Christophi is a Biostatistician. His research group has worked on obesity and diabetes; smoking and health; and several other important topics in Public Health. He is an Associate Professor at CUT and holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor of Occupational and Environmental Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. 
  
 Working with collaborators from Harvard University (including Professors David Christiani, Stefanos Kales and Christos Mantzoros) and from the Cyprus Ministry of Defense, his group initiated an epidemiological investigation of the health of young Cypriot males who were serving in the Cypriot armed forces. Their intent was to study the relationships between genetics, environment, metabolism and obesity in these young recruits. The team found that, when they joined the army, almost one third of these young men were either overweight or obese. Two years later when they left the army, their obesity had increased and their cardiovascular health had deteriorated. 
  
 In a series of manuscripts, working with Prof. Kales at Harvard University and other colleagues, the team explored the roles of obesity, physical activity and measures of cardiorespiratory fitness as predictors of metabolic syndrome (i.e., diabetes) and cardiovascular disease risk among firefighters and other emergency workers. 
  
 Professor Christophi’s research group has also been involved in several studies of tobacco smoking habits and determinants in Cyprus. In this research, through our association with Harvard, they have benefitted from the guidance and direct involvement of Professor Greg Connolly, a world-recognized authority on smoking and health. One study, conducted in close collaboration with Cyprus’ Ministries of Health and Education, collected data on smoking behavior, knowledge and attitudes of Cypriot youth. This investigation found that almost 40% of high school boys and about 25% of girls smoke. The levels of smoking among girls are quite high and suggest that levels of smoking among women in Cyprus are rising dramatically. Also troubling was the finding that almost one quarter of students who did not smoke indicated that they were likely to start smoking within the next year. 
  
 Most recently, in a collaboration involving CII, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait, Prof. Christophi’s group is contributing to the development and analysis of data from a large pregnancy-birth cohort study intended to examine the effect of in utero and early life environmental exposures to the subsequent development of chronic diseases such as diabetes. 
  
 His group’s publication record is impressive, with articles in journals as prestigious as the New England Journal of Medicine (impact factor = 55).

Η Έλενα Θεοδώρου είναι Λογοθεραπεύτρια και κατέχει διδακτορικό τίτλο σπουδών στο αντικείμενο της Γλωσσολογίας από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Η διδακτορική της διατριβή πραγματεύτηκε την ανίχνευση και διάγνωση της (Ειδικής) Γλωσσικής Διαταραχής σε κυπριόπουλα, και αφού βαθμολογήθηκε με Άριστα βραβεύτηκε από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Είναι κάτοχος πτυχίου Λογοθεραπείας από το Ανώτατο Τεχνολογικό Ίδρυμα Πατρών και μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου MSc in Language and Communication Impairment in Children από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield. Εκπαιδεύτηκε στο γλωσσικό σύστημα ΜΑΚΑΤΟΝ, που μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί σε άτομα με σοβαρές δυσκολίες επικοινωνίας και μαθησιακές δυσκολίες, και είναι αναγνωρισμένη εκπαιδεύτρια του συστήματος. Καθόλη τη διάρκεια των βασικών της σπουδών υπήρξε υπότροφος του Ιδρύματος Κρατικών Υποτροφιών Ελλάδος. 
  
 Η τρέχουσα ερευνητική της δραστηριότητα αφορά τον εντοπισμό και διάγνωση παιδιών με (Ειδική) Γλωσσική Διαταραχή και τη χαρτογράφηση των γλωσσικών τους ικανοτήτων με απώτερο σκοπό την πιο αποτελεσματική παρέμβαση. Ασχολείται επίσης με τη διερεύνηση των παρεχόμενων υπηρεσιών λογοθεραπείας σε παιδιά με μη ή πολύ περιορισμένο επικοινωνιακό λόγο, εστιάζοντας στο πεδίο της Εναλλακτικής/ Επαυξητικής Επικοινωνίας. Είναι βασικό μέλος της ερευνητικής ομάδας του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου Cyprus Acquisition Team (CAT), που στόχο έχει τη διερεύνηση της κυπριακής διαλέκτου από τη σκοπιά της κατάκτησης της από μονόγλωσσους, δίγλωσσους και πολύγλωσσους «τυπικά αναπτυσσόμενους» και «μη» πληθυσμούς. Επίσης, έχει εργαστεί και εργάζεται σε ερευνητικά προγράμματα τόσο σε τοπικό όσο και σε Ευρωπαϊκό επίπεδο. Η ερευνητική της συμβολή έχει παρουσιαστεί σε διεθνή συνέδρια καθώς και δημοσιευτεί σε συλλογές και επιστημονικά περιοδικά. Όσον αφορά την κλινική της εμπειρία, εργάστηκε στο Υπουργείο Υγείας σαν Λογοθεραπεύτρια των Ιατρικών Υπηρεσιών, εργάστηκε στη Δημόσια Δημοτική Εκπαίδευση σαν Ειδική Δασκάλα-Λογοθεραπείας και σαν Συνδετική Λειτουργός Ειδικής Εκπαίδευσης. Στα πλαίσια όπου εργάστηκε, παρείχε υπηρεσίες λογοθεραπείας τόσο σε παιδιά όσο και σε ενήλικες με ένα ευρύ φάσμα διαταραχών γλώσσας, λόγου και επικοινωνίας. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρεται πως παρείχε υπηρεσίες λογοθεραπείας σε παιδιά με αναπτυξιακές και νευρολογικές διαταραχές, με γενετικά σύνδρομα, με γενικευμένες μαθησιακές δυσκολίες, με τραυλισμό κ.λ.π., και σε ενήλικες με διαταραχές φωνής, με νευρολογικές παθήσεις, κ.λ.π.. 
  
 Είναι εγγεγραμμένο μέλος του Συλλόγου Λογοπαθολόγων Κύπρου. Διετέλεσε εκπρόσωπος του Συλλόγου Εγγεγραμμένων Λογοπαθολόγων Κύπρου στο Συμβούλιο Ειδικής Αγωγής και Εκπαίδευσης του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού την περίοδο 2012-2015.

Το εργαστήριο με την επωνυμία ΕΠΙ.ΛΟ.Γ.ο ιδρύθηκε από τη Λέκτορα Λογοπαθολογίας Έλενα Θεοδώρου, για να καλύψει ερευνητικές, εκπαιδευτικές και κλινικές ανάγκες στους τομείς των Γλωσσικών και Επικοινωνιακών Διαταραχών στην παιδική ηλικία με χρηματοδότηση από το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (Εναρκτήρια χρηματοδότηση στη Λέκτορα Έλενα Θεοδώρου).  Το εργαστήριο στεγάζεται στο Τμήμα Επιστημών Αποκατάστασης στο κτήριο ZT3, Βραγαδίνου 15, 3041, Λεμεσός. 

Το εργαστήριο είναι εξοπλισμένο με σταθμούς εργασίας όπου οι ερευνητές και οι συνεργάτες τους μπορούν να αποθηκεύσουν και να αναλύσουν ερευνητικά δεδομένα. Είναι εξοπλισμένο μεταξύ άλλων με Διαγνωστικά Εργαλεία Γλώσσας, ταμπλέτες για ανάπτυξη πινάκων επικοινωνίας, εφαρμογές που αφορούν χρήση συμβόλων για γλωσσική ανάπτυξη κ.λ.π. 

Συνοπτικά η δράση του εργαστήριου σχετίζεται α) με τη χαρτογράφηση των γλωσσικών ικανοτήτων παιδιών με αναπτυξιακές γλωσσικές διαταραχές (πρωτογενής και δευτερογενής), β) το σωστό εντοπισμό και αξιόπιστη αξιολόγηση των γλωσσικών δυσκολιών στην παιδική ηλικία, και γ) την αξιοποίηση των ερευνητικών δεδομένων για στοχευμένη παρέμβαση (Evidence Based Practice). Επίσης ασχολείται με δ) τη διερεύνηση των παρεχόμενων υπηρεσιών Εναλλακτικής και Επαυξητικής Επικοινωνίας σε άτομα χωρίς ή με περιορισμένη λεκτική επικοινωνία και ε) πως τα γλωσσικά προγράμματα συμβόλων και νοημάτων (π.χ. ΜΑΚΑΤΟΝ) μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν αποτελεσματικά στη λογοθεραπευτική παρέμβαση τόσο στο επίπεδο της αξιολόγησης όσο και στο σχεδιασμό της παρέμβασης.  Επιπρόσθετα, ασχολείται με τη διερεύνηση της θεραπευτική αντιμετώπισης παιδιών με σοβαρές επικοινωνιακές δυσκολίες, και συγκεκριμένα πως τα προγράμματα που χρησιμοποιούν χειρονομίες, νοήματα και σύμβολα μπορούν να συμβάλουν στην ανάπτυξη της επικοινωνιακής ικανότητας καθώς επίσης και στην ανάπτυξη του προφορικού λόγου.

Η Δρ. Ηλιάδα Πάμπουλου σπούδασε λογοθεραπεία στο Ανώτατο Τεχνολογικό Ίδρυμα Πατρών και συνέχισε τις σπουδές της στο King’s College London, αρχικά για το MSc στην Υποστηρικτική Τεχνολογία και μετέπειτα για τις διδακτορικές σπουδές. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της έλαβε συνολικά τέσσερις χορηγίες από διάφορα ιδρύματα και πιο συγκεκριμένα από το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών, το Ίδρυμα Α.Γ. Λεβέντης και το Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Επιπρόσθετα, η διδακτορική της διατριβή συγχρηματοδοτήθηκε από το Ευρωπαϊκό Ταμείο Περιφερειακής Ανάπτυξης και την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία μέσω του Ιδρύματος Προώθησης Έρευνας. Το τρέχον ερευνητικό της έργο αφορά, κυρίως, το πεδίο της Επαυξητικής και Εναλλακτικής Επικοινωνίας (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) και αποσκοπεί στην βελτίωση παροχής υπηρεσιών λογοθεραπείας για άτομα με μειωμένη ή καθόλου λεκτική επικοινωνία. Συγκεκριμένα, τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα αφορούν την περιεκτική αξιολόγηση, τις διάφορες μεθόδους παρέμβασης μέσω τεχνολογικών βοηθημάτων και τους παράγοντες που αφορούν την αποδοχή/απόρριψη της Υποστηρικτικής Τεχνολογίας. Αναφορικά με την κλινική της εμπειρία, μεταξύ άλλων, εργάστηκε ως λογοθεραπεύτρια σε δημόσια σχολεία στην Κύπρο και στην Αγγλία προσφέροντας συνάμα τις υπηρεσίες της σε μια από τις μεγαλύτερες εταιρείες στην Αγγλία όσον αφορά τα γραφικά σύμβολα. Η Δρ. Πάμπουλου έχει ως στόχο να βοηθήσει έμπρακτα τα άτομα με ελάχιστη ή καθόλου λειτουργική λεκτική επικοινωνία, γι΄ αυτό το λόγο δημοσιεύει τα αποτελέσματα των ερευνητικών της έργων σε επιστημονικά άρθρα και παρουσιάζει την έρευνα της σε συνέδρια τόσο στην Κύπρο όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Ως μέρος της κοινωνικής της προσφοράς, μέσω διαφόρων εργαστηρίων και σεμιναρίων, εκπαιδεύει τόσο ειδικούς (π.χ. λογοθεραπευτές) όσο και γονείς σε θέματα που αφορούν άμεσα το πεδίο της Επαυξητικής και Εναλλακτικής Επικοινωνίας. Επιπρόσθετα, έχοντας ως στόχο την ενημέρωση και την ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού για την Επαυξητική και Εναλλακτική Επικοινωνία, μαζί με τους τεταρτοετείς φοιτητές της, η Δρ. Πάμπουλου δημιούργησε το πιο κάτω βίντεο το οποίο σκοπεύει στην ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού για την Επαυξητική και Εναλλακτική Επικοινωνία.

Το AACTLab αποτελεί το πρώτο εργαστήριο που ιδρύθηκε στην Κύπρο με εξειδίκευση στην Επαυξητική, Εναλλακτική Επικοινωνία και Υποστηρικτική Τεχνολογία στο πεδίο της λογοθεραπείας. Το AACTLab δημιουργήθηκε το 2019, από την Λέκτορα Ηλιάδα Πάμπουλου του Τμήματος Επιστημών Αποκατάστασης του Τεχνολογικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (ΤΕ.ΠΑ.Κ.) με στήριξη από την Εναρκτήριά της Χρηματοδότηση από το ΤΕ.ΠΑ.Κ. 

Το AACTLab ιδρύθηκε έχοντας ως όραμα το θεμελιώδες δικαίωμα των ανθρώπων για έκφραση, κατανόηση λεκτικών πληροφοριών, ανταλλαγή απόψεων, συμμετοχή κατά την λήψη αποφάσεων (π.χ. περίθαλψης) καθώς και το δικαίωμα ανάπτυξης και διατήρησης κοινωνικών σχέσεων.  Απώτερος στόχος του εργαστηρίου είναι η συνεχής και ποιοτική στήριξη των ατόμων με μειωμένη ή καθόλου λεκτική λειτουργική επικοινωνία. Το εργαστήριο στοχεύει να καλύψει τις ποικίλες ερευνητικές, κλινικές, και εκπαιδευτικές ανάγκες που αφορούν το πεδίο της Επαυξητικής και Εναλλακτικής Επικοινωνίας. 

Το AACTLab στοχεύει στην βελτίωση της παροχής ποιοτικών υπηρεσιών σε άτομα με σύνθετες επικοινωνιακές διαταραχές με τους εξής τρόπους: 

εκπόνηση μελετών τόσο σε εθνικό αλλά και διεθνές επίπεδο 

ανάπτυξη και τροποποίηση υφιστάμενων εργαλείων αξιολόγησης 

ανάπτυξη τεχνολογικών συστημάτων για να χρησιμοποιηθούν  για επικοινωνιακούς σκοπούς 

εκπαίδευση φοιτητών,  φροντιστών (π.χ. συγγενών) και επαγγελματιών υγείας (π.χ. λογοθεραπευτών, νοσηλευτών) 

δημιουργία ομάδων συζήτησης για θέματα που αφορούν την στήριξη ατόμων με επίκτητες και σύνθετες επικοινωνιακές διαταραχές  

συνεργασία με φορείς (ακαδημαϊκούς αλλά και από την βιομηχανία), τόσο από την Κύπρο όσο και από το εξωτερικό 

Το AACTLab είναι άρτια εξοπλισμένο με σύγχρονα συστήματα χαμηλής, μεσαίας και υψηλής τεχνολογίας, όπως εκτυπωμένα βιβλία επικοινωνίας, συσκευές παραγωγής ηχητικών μηνυμάτων, συστήματα εισόδου βλεμματικού ελέγχου, διακόπτες και άλλα.  Παρακάτω παρουσιάζεται φωτογραφικό υλικό με παραδείγματα από τον παρεχόμενο εξοπλισμό καθώς και μερικές από τις δράσεις του εργαστηρίου, όπως η εκπαίδευση των φοιτητών στη χρήση της υποστηρικτικής τεχνολογίας.
