Developing learning technologies to promote and scaffold reflective inquiry in science education. This research project focused on developing and researching a web-based learning and teaching platform (STOCHASMOS) for supporting middle school students’ reflective inquiry practices and technology-enhanced learning. Grounded in local and international teacher-researcher-scientist collaborations, the project, under the supervision of E. Kyza, localized STOCHASMOS in 8 languages (Greek, English, Dutch, Swedish , Arabic, Hebrew, and German) and supported the empirical investigation of its affordances in five European countries and Israel.

This research project has a triple focus: on news organizations, on journalists, and on the product of their work, news. Within this research endeavor, the challenges news organizations are facing and the drastic modifications they are undergoing in the light of convergence dynamics, are studied. At the same time, it is investigated how the tasks, roles, self-perception and professional cultures of journalists are (re)appropriated in the internet era. Thirdly, it is examined how the practices related to this new reality are reflected into the news product.

WJS (http://www.worldsofjournalism.org) is an international research network founded to study comparatively journalism cultures on a global scale (Director: Prof. Thomas Hanitzsch, University of Munich) and is a joint effort of researchers from more than 80 countries. The project’s main objective is to develop the conceptual and methodological tools to study journalism cultures across countries. The CIS department has joined the network and is currently conducting the national study of Cypriot journalists.

This research project involves the design and implementation of a Voting Advice Application for the Application for the national elections in Greece in May and June 2012. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Communication and Internet Studies (TEPAK), the e-Democracy Centre, Center for Democracy Aarau, University of Zurich, the Department of Public Administration, University of Twente, the Nuffield College, University of Oxford and the Department of Psychology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Data collected involved approximately the participation of 120.000 Greek voters in the platform.

The research project on the foreign correspondents in Cyprus is part of a pan- European study involving researchers and academics from 35 countries. Being the first of its kind, it aims at the mapping of foreign correspondents and their reporting in Europe in terms of human geography, working conditions, as well as of the factors and forces that affect news coverage in Europe and for Europe, in a period of rapid and radical changes for journalism.

Representations of the Crisis in the News Representations of the Crisis in the News

This research project studies the media’s representations of the financial crises in Greece and in Cyprus, focusing on how the domestic legacy press framed the discussion on the bailout agreements the two countries signed with the troika. The analysis points to a restrictive, fragmented, decontextualised discourse, where critical elements of the issue are omitted and where governmental and troika policies are legitimized by the media coverage of the bailout-related news through a set of discursive mechanisms.

 Η ιδέα του World Internet Project γεννήθηκε στο UCLA Center for Communication Policy (σήμερα USC Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future) και το πρόγραμμα ιδρύθηκε με τη συνεργασία του NTU School of Communication Studies στη Σιγκαπούρη και του Osservatorio Internet Italia στο Bocconi University στο Μιλάνο της Ιταλίας.

Από την πρώτη στιγμή οι ιδρυτές του προγράμματος αντελήφθησαν ότι η αυξανόμενη επιρροή της ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας και του διαδικτύου είναι ένα δι-εθνικό φαινόμενο. Σήμερα το πρόγραμμα εκτείνεται σε όλο τον κόσμο και καλύπτει περισσότερες από 25 χώρες. Με έδρα πανεπιστήμια και ερευνητικά ινστιτούτα σε όλον τον κόσμο, το WIP διεξάγει λεπτομερή έρευνα, παράγει πλήθος δημοσιεύσεων και οργανώνει ετήσια συνέδρια με αντικείμενο τις επιδράσεις των νέων τεχνολογιών.

Το Τμήμα Επικοινωνίας και Σπουδών Διαδικτύου, εκπροσωπώντας την Κύπρο στο WIP, διεξάγει σε βάθος έρευνα με στόχο να εξηγήσει με ποιον τρόπο το διαδίκτυο επηρεάζει τη ζωή στην Κύπρο, στη βάση της διαχρονικής συγκριτικής έρευνας και ανάλυσης των κοινωνικών, οικονομικών  πολιτισμικών και πολιτικών μεταβολών που επέρχονται ως αποτέλεσμα της χρήσης του διαδικτύου.
