ENG 181 English for Environmental Science and Technology
ENG 181 is a degree level course requiring three hours of lectures per week offering 4-credits towards the overall degree – the course concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP). ENG 181 is particularly designed to assist the English Language development of university students studying in the field of Environmental Management to an academic level equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level B2). The course intends to familiarise the students with relevant reading material. This will be used to acquaint the students with genre (lab reports, proposals, memos, articles, emails), and writing styles (classification and argumentation, cause and effect, description of a process). Furthermore, learners are expected to develop their listening skills and speaking fluency by taking an active part in discussions, giving oral presentations, etc. Students are expected to develop a sufficient range of language, phonological control and sociolinguistic awareness to be able to express themselves with a degree of clarity, fluency and spontaneity.

ENG 191 English for Commerce, Finance and Shipping
ENG 191 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP). ENG 191 is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of Commerce, Finance and Shipping and to develop their English language to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level B2). The course intends to familiarise the students with relevant reading material. This will be used to acquaint the students with genre and writing styles specific to students’ specialisation. French 111 For Specific Academic Purposes (French for hotel and tourism industries)
French 111.2 is a four-hour per week, 6-credit elective course that concentrates on the learning of French for hotel and tourism industries at beginners’ level. This course prepares students to acquire basic language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in French, so as to enable them to communicate with French-speaking customers in everyday situations, responding to the basic needs of the hotel and tourism sector. They will be able to use and understand simple sentences and vocabulary useful in matters directly related to their professional field: welcome and greet a customer or a group, present themselves and present their colleagues, the hotel / tourism facilities and the town, share key information with customers and make reservations on-site, by phone or online, complete a booking form, accompany a customer to his room and show it, provide information to customers regarding the hotel, the city, tours etc.. They will also be able to exchange information with French-speaking people at a social and professional level, in case of visiting a French-speaking country or studying there. The program is based on student-centered teaching methods, and on students’ autonomous learning. The use of new technologies (Computer Assisted Language Learning) is an integral part of the learning process so that students can fully develop language and other skills. At the end of the semester, students will have met many of the requirements of A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
ITA 114 Italian Language IV
Τετράωρο μάθημα, έξι πιστωτικών μονάδων, ελεύθερης επιλογής. Στόχος αυτού του επιπέδου είναι οι φοιτητές να γίνουν πιο ανεξάρτητοι στη χρήση της γλώσσας και να επικοινωνούν με αυτοπεποίθηση προφορικά και γραπτά σε θέματα όπως η περιγραφή εμπειριών και γεγονότων, μελλοντικών σχεδίων, επιθυμιών, ονείρων και στόχων. Οι φοιτητές θα μπορούν να γράφουν ένα απλό και δομημένο κείμενο. Θα μπορούν επίσης να ανταλλάσσουν πληροφορίες με ιταλόφωνους στην Κύπρο ή σε περίπτωση διαμονής τους σε ιταλόφωνες χώρες ή φοίτησής τους σε ιταλόφωνο πανεπιστήμιο. Το πρόγραμμα βασίζεται σε μαθητοκεντρικές μεθόδους διδασκαλίας, καθώς και στην αυτόνομη μάθηση των φοιτητών. Η χρήση των νέων τεχνολογιών (Computer Assisted Language Learning) αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της μαθησιακής διαδικασίας, ώστε οι φοιτητές να αναπτύξουν πλήρως γλωσσικές και άλλες δεξιότητες. Στο τέλος του εξαμήνου αναμένεται οι φοιτητές να έχουν καλύψει πλήρως τις απαιτήσεις του επιπέδου Α2 και μερικώς τις απαιτήσεις του επιπέδου Β1 του Κοινού Ευρωπαϊκού Πλαισίου Αναφοράς για τις Γλώσσες.

ENG 170 is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of Communication, Mass Media and Internet Studies and to develop their English language to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages level B2. This course intends to familiarise the students with relevant spoken and written discourse forms such as reports, articles, and oral presentations. Students will be acquainted with writing rhetoric styles such as definition, process analysis, comparison and contrast, cause and effect and classification. Furthermore, learners are expected to develop their listening comprehension and speaking fluency by taking an active part in discussion, giving oral presentations, defending their opinion, etc. They are expected to develop sufficient range of language, phonological control and sociolinguistic awareness to be able to express themselves with a degree of clarity, fluency and spontaneity. ENG 110 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for students with differentiated abilities (ΑΜΔΙ). ENG 110 is particularly designed to help students familiarize themselves with the English language and develop their skills to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level A1) in all four areas, (speaking, listening, reading and writing). In this course the material is designed based on the learners’ abilities and needs. The course takes a communicative approach while concentrating on further enriching students’ knowledge of English, as well as developing their English language and Academic skills.
LCE 126 English for Specific Academic Purposes for Students with Differentiated Abilities II
ENG 113 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic Purposes (EAP) for students with differentiated abilities (ΑΜΔΙ). ENG 113 is particularly designed to help students studying in the field of Communication and Internet Studies familiarize themselves with the English language and develop their skills to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level B1-B2). All the material covered is structured on the students’ abilities and educational needs as well as on their field of study.

LCE 126 English for Specific Academic Purposes for Students with Differentiated Abilities
ENG 111 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic Purposes (EAP) for students with differentiated abilities (ΑΜΔΙ). ENG 111 is particularly designed to help students familiarize themselves with the English language and develop their skills to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level A1- A2). The various learning difficulties of the students are enhanced and their English language skills are enriched based on their field of studies and their educational needs.

ENG 112 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic Purposes (EAP) for students with differentiated abilities (ΑΜΔΙ). ENG 112 is particularly designed to help students studying in the field of Communication and Internet Studies familiarize themselves with the English language and develop their skills to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level A2 –B1). This course seeks to introduce students with material from their field of study in all areas of the English language (listening, speaking, reading and writing). All matters covered are according to the learners’ abilities and needs.

ENG 220 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic purposes (ESAP). Being the second in a series of three ESAP courses it is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of communication and media studies and to develop their English language to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level B2-C1). This course aims to acquaint students with the English theory and terminology relating to the field. This is achieved by providing students with opportunities to involve themselves in analyzing and producing different types of communication media such as articles, reviews editorials etc. Students also study different types of print media and write news stories, analyze coverage of national events, and write in other print media genres. Media sources may include, among others, the internet, newspapers, and television. Special attention is also placed on the development of skills in critical thinking and evaluation of authentic material from the field of Mass media and communication. Oral work includes discussions of topics and other speaking projects, such as social conversation, meetings, debates, public speaking, news panels, and interviews.

ENG 270 is a three-hour per week, 4-credit, required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Specific Academic purposes (ESAP). It is the last in a series of three courses particularly designed to meet the needs of university students in the field of communication and media studies and to develop their English language to an academic level equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (level C1-C2). Τhis course aims at enabling students to gain a deeper knowledge of the theory and practice concerning their area of interest. Special emphasis is placed on the topics of intercultural communication and the preparation of various types of Communication messages. Opportunities will be provided by the instructor for further assimilation of the theory behind effective communication on one hand, and on the other hand, application of this theory in the organization and production of written and oral communication through especially designed authentic tasks. More specifically students will have practice in composing various types of written messages used for communication purposes such as correspondence (letters, emails etc.) as well as various print media genres (advertisements, editorials and so on) Furthermore opportunities will be provided for the development of listening and speaking skills by taking an active part in activities such as discussions, speeches, seminars and oral presentations. By improving their communication skills this course aims to equip students with the necessary skills and abilities they will need in order to deal with the challenges which they will face both at university and in the workplace.

LCE 510 Second Language Acquisition (SLA)
LCE 510 aims at introducing Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and emphasises how it has developed in the digital era. The module provides an overview of SLA, its principles and practices, and places particular emphasis on how the field has changed since the integration of technology in the language classroom. It also focuses on the changes in second language acquisition in the 21st century classroom, drawing fromrelated disciplines within general linguistics, theories of language, and applied linguistics, such as multilingualism, transdisciplinarity, translanguaging, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, technology enhanced language learning, education and pedagogy. The module covers topics such as linguistic elements, input, interaction, output and technology, aptitude, motivation, socio-cultural theory, and ecological linguistics. On completion of this module, learners should be able to demonstrate an understanding of SLA and basic concepts in general and applied linguistics. They should also be able to identify the changes in the field of SLA in 21st century technology enhanced language learning environments.
LCE 511 Second Language Teaching Methods (L2TM)
LCE 511 aims at introducing an historical overview in language teaching methodologies and their theoretical principles, focusing on recent developments and especially on the use of technology for teaching and learning purposes. It provides an account of and online demonstrations of a variety of methodologies, including online, hybrid and flipped class learning, taking a critical stance. Moreover, participants are provided with the opportunity to reflect on their language teaching and/or learning practices and on adapting these according to recent technological developments. Emphasis is placed on the study of teaching the four skills, i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as grammar and vocabulary using a communicative approach and through a pedagogical use of technology. The course also covers issues such as planning lesson, organising classroom materials and designing and evaluating courses (link with Course 6: LCE 515), providing participants with the opportunity to put these into practice through online task-based activities, projects, demonstrations and e-portfolios. On completion of this course, participants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the recent pedagogical and technological developments in language teaching methods. They should also be able to apply this knowledge, as well as develop electronic materials (link with Course 6: LCE 515).
LCE 512 Second Language Instructional Technology (SliT)
LCE 512 aims to set students on track to becoming autonomous lifelong learners in the field of second language instructional technology (SliT). To achieve this goal, students will be provided with a broad perspective of SLIT: where it has come from, where it is now, and its likely future directions. Students will get practical experience using multimedia-editing tools (text, audio, graphics, video) in the preparation of their assignments. Using Internet search engines, they will discover what the primary professional resources of the field are and how to access them. They will explore and evaluate different types of technology enhanced language learning activity types: tutorials, tools, simulations, games, and communication. In so doing, they will get hands-on experience using applications designed to foster specific language skill areas, cultural knowledge and communicative competence. As part of the collaborative assignments upon which the course is based, students will develop their practical competence in the use of social networking sites and computer-mediated-communication applications: discussion forums, chats, wikis, and blogs. They will likewise learn to use various technology-based tools as language teaching applications. At the end of the course, through the e-portfolio that they produce, students will possess an extensive summary of what they have learned and created in the course for their future reference in the MA in TELL programme and ongoing professional development.
LCE 513 Technology Enhanced Language Curriculum Development & Evaluation (TELCDE)
LCE 513 aims at establishing students’ background in L2 Assessment and Testing, both as students and as teachers, and in current theories and practices in L2 Learning, in order to set the scene for further learning and development. It develops students’ awareness, knowledge, skills and experience in L2 Assessment and Testing and Technology Assisted Language Assessment and Testing (TALAT). Students are also engaged in constructivist, reflective, independent, and at the same time collaborative learning, teaching, assessment and testing, and are provided with the opportunity to showcase this development through keeping an ePortfolio . Finally, the module aims at developing a solid grounding in language assessment and testing that will enable them to participate in the development of assessment tasks, the development and administration of tests in an educational institution setting, and the critical evaluation of assessment tasks and tests.
LCE 514 Research Methodologies in Applied Linguistics (RMAL)
The LCE 514 module concentrates on Research Methods in Applied Linguistics and aims to provide students with background knowledge on research methodologies and design, development and evaluation, in order to be able to autonomously design, develop and evaluate their research studies and quality of their data. The course considers a number of current approaches to research in foreign language teaching contexts. These include qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The course draws from SLA, Language Teaching Methodologies, CALL, TELL, and L2 Assessment and Evaluation. It gives the opportunity to students to put everything they have learned in the earlier modules into their investigations. They will write a research proposal, plan, design and develop a study, conduct an investigation, collect data, analyse it and disseminate it. This will entail the use of technology. This journey will bring students closer to examining their profession in depth and help them seek various ways of making a difference and improving language teaching through TELL.
LCE 515 Technology Enhanced Language Assessment & Testing (TELAT)
LCE515 aims to provide students with background knowledge in L2 curriculum and syllabus design, development and evaluation, in order to be able to autonomously design, develop and evaluate their curricula. LCE515 considers a number of current approaches to language syllabus design in second and foreign language teaching contexts. These include functional-notional, communicative, content based, task-based, genre-based, and competency-based syllabi. The course draws from SLA, Language Teaching Methodologies, TELL and L2 Assessment and Evaluation. It gives the opportunity to students to put everything they have learned in the other courses into curriculum development. They plan, design and develop a syllabus and a lesson plan drawn from their current practice context. This will include learning (and assessment) tasks in all language skills. This will entail the use of TELL. Students evaluate their current curriculum, give suggestions for improvement, trial and evaluate their improvements and draw conclusions. The implementation occurs in class with their students, as well as in online synchronous & asynchronous environments, in the form of microteaching. This course also links with course 8, which deals with personal teaching experience in ESL at tertiary level and online teaching and learning.
LCE 516 Emerging Technologies in Language Learning (ETLL)
LCE516 aims to provide students with the background knowledge of various emerging technologies required to allow them to independently pursue research in the field of TELL and undertake the application of these technologies in their own language teaching context. To achieve this goal, students will discover where different emerging technologies have come from, where they are now, and their likely future directions. The course presupposes a broad knowledge of Technology Enhanced Language Learning, its historical development and applications. Working together in small groups, students exploit Internet resources (search engines, websites) and communication technologies (discussion forums, chats, wikis, blogs) and proceed to more emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Natural Language Processing, robotics, virtual and augmented reality focusing mainly on their affordances and constraints. Pedagogically, emerging technologies are examined relative to the skill areas that have been targeted and the underlying methodological approaches that have been followed. Using their own devices students gain first-hand experience in creating and using different emerging technologies based upon learner-centered, constructivist, pedagogical principles. At the end of the course, through the e-portfolios, students will possess an extensive summary of what they have learned and created in the course for their future reference in the MA in TELL programme and ongoing professional development.
LCE 517 TELL from the Student Perspective (TELLSP)
LCE 517 is designed to develop and build on what has been discussed and practised in other courses in the specific online MA programme. The module is divided into three parts. In the first component, the aim is to provide learners with the theoretical background of evaluating and developing e-material and providing them with the opportunity to put this input into practice, through the use of technologies. The learners who are already practising language instructors can evaluate e-material they use and develop e-material for the needs of their students. The learners who still do not practise the profession will be provided with e-material to evaluate and a context for which they can develop e-material. Moreover, they will be introduced to topics such as writing and giving clear instructions for language classroom purposes, as well as technologies they can use to create presentations and handouts. In the second component of the course, learners will experience online Language for General Purposes classes, taking the role of students, and will be asked to evaluate the methodologies and e-materials used. In the last part of the module, learners will be asked to put current language teaching methodologies into practice through online microteaching. In this case, they will be asked to implement the e-material they evaluate and develop, through the use of technologies. The language instructor (MA student) will be observed by the module instructor as well as the other learners who will act as language students and they will provide feedback to the former. The lessons use and recommend a variety of technology tools that can be used for pedagogical purposes. For this purpose, the students will have to attend synchronous and asynchronous online lessons, in which they are provided with activities that are designed based on recent developments in language teaching, focusing on the usage of technology (link with courses LCE 512, 515 & LCE 516). Assessment will be based on the completion of the variety of weekly activities, including e-materials evaluation and development, microteaching and an e-portfolio. On completion of this course, participants should be able to use technology tools (link with courses 512 & 516) for pedagogical purposes. They will also be able to practise in reflective learning, self-assessment (link with LCE 515).
LCE 580 MA Dissertation
The LCE580 MA Dissertation Course offers students the chance to undertake and complete a sustained research project (approximately 15,000 words or 20,000 words depending on the research route you are taking) on a topic of special interest. To write a dissertation, students must firstly identify the broad area of interest before the commencement of the semester and during LCE514 Research Methodologies in Applied Linguistics. Once students register to the course, they should indicate their provisional option choices depending on their research interests. After approval of the research topics from the MA in TELL academic committee, students will be guided as to how to carry out their research study, both the theoretical (LCE 510, LCE 511, LCE 512, LCE 513, LCE 515, LCE 516, LCE 517) and methodological part (LCE 514), following step-by-step weekly activities and timeline.
LCE 600 Advanced English
LCE 600 is a three-hour per week, 4-ECTS credit (European Credits Transfer and Accumulation System) required degree level course that concentrates on the learning of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). LCE 600 is particularly designed to support students’ studies by developing their English language to an academic level, equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages level B1-B2. This course, based on the blended learning approach, aims to familiarise students with authentic reading material related to general and academic topics. This material is used to acquaint students with writing styles, such as process and argumentation. It also develops students’ listening and speaking skills. Learners are expected in this way to develop their speaking and listening abilities by taking an active part in tasks such as dialogues, conversations, and oral presentations. The course is designed to meet the needs of university students from various fields and focuses on the development of speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. They are expected to understand simple phrases and basic everyday life vocabulary, talk about themselves and ask similar questions, talk about their daily activities and their place of residence.
