Module Descriptions:

LCE103 English for Shipping I

The general objective of this course is to enable students to communicate competently at a Β1-B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. It is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of Shipping. The course aims to introduce students to the use of the English language in an efficient and fluent way in the performance of their duties as future professionals in the Shipping Industry. This is accomplished through the use of a variety of topics and genres, related to their field of study and task-based activities supported by information and communication technologies. The material is specialized and relevant to the most common text types used in the field of Shipping. Learners are expected to develop their listening and note-taking skills during the activities. Moreover, working collaboratively in small groups, students will expand their language abilities by carrying out further research on specific topics related to the material provided and writing summaries.  The main aims of the course are to develop the language particularly useful in the students’ field, to promote their communication and critical thinking abilities, as well as to assist them in becoming independent life-long learners.

LCE104 English for Shipping IΙ

The general objective of this course is to enable students to communicate competently at a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. The course aims at providing learners with opportunities to engage further with the theory relating to their area of study. This is achieved through specialized material related to the genres and writing styles from their area(s) of specialization. Interactive presentations and discussions facilitate the consolidation of theory on Shipping on one hand and its application in the organization and production of oral and written texts through authentic-like tasks on the other. More specifically, learners engage in the composition of different types of written texts, used for communication in the Shipping industry such as correspondence (e.g. Emails), safety reports, chartering documentation etc. Additionally, opportunities will be offered for the development of listening comprehension and speaking skills through learners’ participation in activities such as oral presentations. The course is based on current language learning theories and it aims at developing students’ language skills, as well as transferrable 21st century skills, particularly important for the shipping industry (e.g. communication, digital literacy, collaboration, creativity, innovation, critical thinking, etc.).

SHP111 Introduction to Shipping

The course introduces fundamental principles related to shipping. This course describes and analyzes issues related to the design and organization of the global shipping industry, cargo carried and the types of ships together with their characteristics as well as the analysis of the key players of the maritime industry. Finally, this course enables students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the geography of maritime transport. More specifically, this course will analyze in detail the global maritime trade, major cargoes, key trade routes, the importance of major passages in international trade, ports and terminals and the importance of integrating supply chain and logistics.

SHP112 Economics

This course is intended to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts governing our economic interactions, institutions, and policies, and to furnish them with an analytical framework with which to view the functioning of economies in a more critical light. It covers both microeconomics and macroeconomics, aiming to introduce students to some fundamental concepts and theories within economics and equip students with appropriate analytical skills, especially descriptive and graphical methods of analysis. The focus is mainly on economic theory but "real world" applications of relevant theories will also be examined.

SHP113 Mathematics

The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of Mathematics and Linear Algebra in particular.  Students are introduced to the theory and understanding of the basic concepts of functions, linear equations, matrix algebra, derivatives, and integrals.

SHP114 Statistics

The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to statistical concepts and methodologies, with a specific focus on applications within the shipping industry. Students will learn to apply statistical techniques using the SPSS software. The course covers the basics of data collection, descriptive and inferential statistics, probability, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, and more, providing students with the skills necessary to analyze and interpret data effectively. Practical lab sessions using SPSS will reinforce theoretical knowledge and offer hands-on experience.

SHP121 Ship Technology

The objective of this course is to assist students to understand the technical characteristics, materials, and dimensions of ship construction. Students should be able to know how a ship is constructed. Also, another aim is to provide the teaching materials related to ship appliances and equipment used for shipping operations during loading and unloading of cargo. A module in which students will learn the basis of ship design and its implications. The module also concentrates on ship’s hulls hydrodynamics and construction.

 

SHP122 Maritime Economics

This module enables students to understand the concepts, techniques and methods for making sound economic decisions in the shipping industry. Specifically, the module will discuss in-depth concepts such as the economic structure of the shipping industry and its main characteristics that set it distinct from other industries, the economics of bulk and liner service, the demand and supply forces in the shipping industry, the freight rate contracts and the four shipping markets: i.e. freight, newbuilding, second-hand and demolition markets. Finally, the module will introduce students to special topics of shipping economics, such as the cyclicality and seasonality of freight rates and vessel prices.

 

SHP123 Mathematics for Shipping

The purpose of this course is to empower students with the necessary knowledge of Mathematics, and introduce them to applications of Mathematics in Shipping.   Students are expanding their knowledge of mathematical tools, and are introduced to more advanced concepts, such as partial derivatives, integration, differential equations and approximation of functions.

SHP124 Statistics for Shipping

The purpose of this course is to enhance students with advanced knowledge of Statistics and statistical analysis and teach them how to use advanced statistical tools on applications within shipping. Students will also learn how to use software packages for data analysis and timeseries analysis.
