Venetia Papa (Ph.D.) is an Assistant Professor in Journalism and Digital Media at the Department of Communication and Internet Studies, at the Cyprus University of technology. She has previously worked at the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cyprus. Venetia received her Ph.D. in Communication and Internet Studies from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis, and her MA and BA from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, in France. Her Ph.D. research explored the role of Facebook in shaping civic and collective identities within the Indignados movement in France and Greece, earning her the highest honors (Mention Très Honorable avec Félicitations du Jury).

Venetia’s research interests are situated at the intersection of new media technologies, journalism, and citizenship. Her work delves into topics such as algorithmic curation, and journalism, exploring how algorithms and automation impact news production and the public's engagement with media. Additionally, she investigates the role of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in forming civic identities, as well as the proliferation of fake news and the importance of data media literacy in digital landscapes.

In her most recent research projects, Venetia explores the implications of platforms and AI, on journalism practice.

Venetia has participated in numerous prestigious European research programs, contributing as a senior expert and coordinator. She is actively involved in large-scale European Union-funded projects such as Horizon2020 and Erasmus+, where she collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to address pressing issues in media and communication. Some of her recent project involvements include the ONISILOS project, where she served as the primary supervisor, and the ISMED Clim project on climate change-related health risks. She has published over 20 articles in peer-reviewed and top-tier journals such as European Journal of Communication, Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice, Information, Communication & Society, Convergence: The International Journal of New Media Technologies, Journal of Feminist Media Studies, and Popular Communication. She co-authored the book, “Mobilisations Numériques: Politiques du conflit et technologies médiatiques” (Les Presses des Mines, 2017, in French) where she explores the role of digital technologies in mediating political conflicts. She is also a regular reviewer for high-impact journals and serves as a guest editor for special issues on topics such as AI and media.
